Magical Max and Magical Mickey’s Big Surprise, written by Penelope Anne Cole and illustrated by Kevin Scott Collier, is the fifth and final book in Ms. Cole’s Magical series and is another terrific example of the importance of doing good for others.

The twins, Max and Mickey, are now 9 years old and know their magic is on borrowed time.  Their siblings, Matthew and Mea, both lost their magic when their final baby tooth fell out which is looming for both Max and Mickey.  They work as often as they can on creating the perfect gift to mark the big graduation milestone for Matthew, Mea and Matthew’s best friend, Lily.  But what is the big surprise and will they finish on time?  Max and Mickey prove anything is possible with determination and persistence (even without much magic).

As always, Penelope Anne Cole shows the importance of doing good deeds for others and the satisfaction gained in doing so.  Kevin Scott Collier’s beautiful illustrations are the perfect partner to Ms. Cole’s writing, and the final result is a fun adventure that will draw readers of many ages.

I, for one, am sad to say good bye to all of the Magical family!

The Adventure Continues

Title: Magical Max and Magical Mickey

Print & eBook: 34 Pages

Magical Max and Magical Mickey, written by Penelope Anne Cole and illustrated by Kevin Scott Collier, is a very “special” chapter book for young readers ages 5-8.

The “magical” story continues in Magical Max and Magical Mickey.  Once the initial shock of a family meeting wears off, older siblings Matthew and Mea are excited to see if history continues and the new additions to the family share their magical secret and develop magic of their own.  They watch closely for signs along with Grandma Nonie, who kept their secret when Matthew and Mea developed “special” talents of their own, but worry permeates their days as they go about school and their own lives and are afraid they will miss the signs.  With Matthew in college and Mea starting Middle School, can they rely on Grandma Nonie, who is not as spry as she once was, to see the signs? Will the twins develop their own magic and, if so, will they be able to hide it from Mom and Dad as Matthew and Mea did before their magic disappeared?  Only time will tell!  Watch for a special twist at the end of the story as well.

As always, Ms. Cole sets a fine example for kids without them ever realizing she is doing so.  Her writing is relatable and exciting, and Kevin Scott Collier’s vibrant and colorful illustrations partner well with this story to create a must read book for children.

Let the adventure begin…Penelope Anne Cole does not disappoint!

Book Review: A Delightful Magical Story

Title: Magical Mea Goes to School
Author: Penelope Anne Cole
Illustrator: Kevin Scott Collier
eBook: 32 Pages
Publisher: Magical Book Works
Published: June 29, 2015
ISBN-10: 194319601X
ISBN-13: 978-1-943196-01-2

Magical Mea Goes to School, written by Penelope Anne Cole and illustrated by Kevin Scott Collier, is a continuation of the story and engaging characters we met in Ms. Cole’s Magical Matthew and Magical Mea books.

Mea has struggled in the past to use her magical powers for good and had to learn not to be such a trickster with her powers. Now starting 2nd grade, Mea’s brother, Matthew, his friend, Lily, and Grandma Nonie are concerned Mea won’t keep her powers “fixing things” secret and feel she needs additional training. Mea has other ideas and wants more play time so over-schedules her after school hours to avoid her “lessons.” Not that the others should be concerned. Mea shows she is perfectly capable of using her “trickster” magic for good all on her own to “save the day.”

Ms. Cole is wonderful at teaching lessons in a fun way without adult intervention and embeds important messages (“I know I helped them and that’s enough”) in a relatable and fun story kids will love.  Kevin Scott Collier’s vibrant illustrations are terrific and expressive and really bring Ms. Cole’s story and characters to life.
